The Colorado Humane Society and SPCA (CHS) is headquartered in Denver and is the oldest animal welfare organization in Colorado. CHS is in the process of launching a cruelty investigations program aimed at supporting communities and local law enforcement agencies in under-served rural areas in eastern Colorado.
The Chief Cruelty Investigator position is based in Denver and will be responsible for the management of the investigations program and supporting staff.
Position description
Commissioned by the state of Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection, this position is responsible for the overall development and management of a state-wide animal cruelty investigations program. Serves as a law enforcement representative for the CHS in the prevention of cruelty and neglect to companion animals and equines. Liaison to appropriate local agencies. Responsible for managing the work of field staff who enforce local and state animal laws and ordinances. Follows progress of all investigations and oversees civil and criminal cases through the court process. Provides quality animal and people care in accordance with the CHS’s mission, goals and management philosophy.
Position Requirements
At least 3 years management experience. Knowledge of law enforcement techniques, principals and practices. Knowledge of local and state animal laws, court procedures and investigations techniques. Knowledge of animal health and well-being. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated program management knowledge and abilities including basic statistical methods and knowledge of budgeting principals and procedures.
Desired
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field and 5 years of management experience. Expert knowledge of city, county, state and federal laws relating to animal welfare. Expertise in the care and handling of equine. Bilingual in Spanish.
Special Condition of Employment
Ability to obtain State of Colorado certification as cruelty investigator and commission from the Department of Agriculture within 120 days of employment.
