Scott L. Pratt, CLPE,CFWE, FFS Laboratory Agent, Colorado Bureau of Investigation-  This workshop will cover the basics of photography how they work together. We’ll cover the camera, the camera settings, the lens, f-stops, shutter speeds, the film/chip (ISO, raw, tiff, jpg, pixels), the flash and its settings, the cords or lack of, scales, a few cheap tricks, and the crime scene/comparison photo process.  It would be advantageous if the student could bring the  camera they use, the owners manual, a tripod, and a removable flash (bring what you can/have). The Captive Wildlife Crisis in America – Its Impact on Communities and Animal Control Agencies

Pat Craig, Founder & Executive Director of “The Wild Animal Sanctuary,” - America’s “Captive Wildlife Crisis” consists of some 30,000 exotic and endangered large carnivores living outside the zoo system in our country.  Mr. Craig will discuss the origins of this problem and how it became the dramatic situation it is today, as well as what happens to these animals and where they go when they are confiscated due to illegal or abusive situations.  He will relate actual case studies, and discuss options for law enforcement and animal control agencies as they encounter increasing numbers of captive large carnivores in their work, including moving and transporting animals, and other safety issues.

The Unwanted Horse in Colorado

Christopher D. Whitney—President , Unwanted Horse Coalition—The American Association of Equine Practitioners coined the term "unwanted horse" and defined it as "Horses that are no longer wanted by their current owner because they are old, sick, injured, unmanageable, or fail to meet their owner's expectations." The closure of horse processing plants in the US, coupled with rising costs of feed and care, appears to be creating an increase in the number of unwanted horses in Colorado. With Mr. Whitney assistance we will seek answers to current and future issues surrounding the “Unwanted Horse in Colorado.”

Meth Lab Awareness- Recognition & Dangers

Herb George, Battalion Chief, High Country Training Center will be presenting meth lab recognition and dangers.  This presentation will familiarize public servants to the dangers of illicit methamphetamine production in the communities in which they work and respond.  The class will be introduced to how the drug is produced, the dangers of the chemicals used in production, and how to recognize the presence of a possible lab. Open discussion will also revolve around decontamination of responders, suspects and animals.

What’s Waiting in the Woods

John Pape, Colorado State Health Dept. with the Zoonoses Update will provide the current status of several zoonotic diseases of interest to Colorado public health and animal control agencies.  Topics will likely include plague, tularemia, West Nile virus and review of laboratory testing available at state health.  With the recent emergence of skunk rabies in eastern Colorado and a national human rabies vaccine shortage, rabies issues will be covered in-depth.  As always time will be made for any late breaking topics and to facilitate questions and discussion on communicable disease issues.

Wildlife Handling and Capture

We will be visiting The Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation that is located in rural Garfield County near the town of Silt. The Mission Statement of the Schneegas Foundation is to provide quality, professional care and rehabilitation for injured or orphaned wildlife, in conjunction with educational programs on wildlife and environmental issues.
